Rebuilding South Kitsap - Stronger, Safer Schools

The schools targeted for the majority of the bond funding haven't undergone any manner of remodeling since 1978 and are among the oldest in South Kitsap School District. A new school hasn't been constructed since 1988. All South Kitsap School District schools are eligible for SCAP (state construction assistance program) funding due to their age. While every site has improvement needs, the 2023 bond is the critical first step to address the sites with the most urgent needs. There will be improvements made in all areas of the district if the Bond is successful.

School Replacement Projects

Replace Cedar Heights Middle School

Replacement Concept for Cedar Heights Middle School:

Build school on current site located on Pottery Avenue
110,000 sqft. school with 800 student capacity
Eliminate 9 portable classrooms
Current school would remain occupied during construction of the new school
Potentially repurpose gymnasium in new construction
Include community meeting space in new construction
Cedar Heights was built in 1968 with no major renovations
$83.6 million bond ask
Eligible for estimated $12.7 million in state construction assistance funding

Replace South Colby Elementary

Replacement Concept for South Colby Elementary:

Build school on current site on Banner Road
63,000 sqft. school with 400 student capacity
Eliminate 11 portable classrooms
Current school would remain occupied during construction
Include early learning center
Include community meeting space in new construction
South Colby was built in 1956 with no major renovations
$50.7 million bond ask
Eligible for estimated $4.4 million in state construction assistance funding

Replace Olalla Elementary

Replacement Concept for Olalla Elementary:

Build school on current site on Denny Bond Blvd
63,000 sqft. school with 400 student capacity
Eliminate 6 portable classrooms
Current school would remain occupied during construction
Include early learning center
Include community meeting space in new construction
Olalla was built in 1954 with multiple additions
$48.3 million bond ask
Eligible for estimated $6.8 million in state construction assistance funding

Replace Explorer Academy

Replacement Concept for Explorer Academy and Discovery High School:

Build combined campus at Madrona Heights site. Two separate schools with shared connecting space.
34,900 square foot school with 400 student capacity
Eliminate 6 portable classrooms
Include collaboration and cafeteria spaces
$26 million bond ask
Eligible for $3.8 million in state construction assistance funding

Replace Discovery High School

Replacement Concept for Explorer Academy and Discovery High School:

Build combined campus at Madrona Heights site. Two separate schools with shared connecting space.
34,900 square foot school with 400 student capacity
Eliminate 6 portable classrooms
Include collaboration and cafeteria spaces
$26 million bond ask total including Explorer
Eligible for $3.8 million in state construction assistance funding

South Kitsap High School

Phase 1 renovation of South Kitsap High School

Renovate the oldest section of South Kitsap High School built in 1962 to support trades and technical learning (21st Century Learning Center)
The South wing has outdated electrical infrastructure
Commons area and kitchen expansion
School would be occupied during construction
$38.3 million bond ask
Eligible for $8.5 million in SCAP assistance

Districtwide Improvements

The Bond will fund up to $24 million in improvements at sites not slated for major renovation or replacement. Projects will include heating and cooling systems, intercoms, parking access, roofing projects, safety enhancements, and accessibility upgrades. Funds are slated to go toward Orchard Heights, Burley Glenwood, Manchester, East Port Orchard, Hidden Creek, Mullenix Ridge, Sidney Glen, Sunnyslope, John Sedgwick, and Marcus Whitman.
