Washington State AuditorIn a report published by the Washington State Auditor’s Office on May 20, 2019, it was found that South Kitsap School District (SKSD) has successfully complied with state laws and regulations, federal regulations, and its own policies and procedures.

The final report contains results for the period of September 1, 2017, through August 31, 2018. South Kitsap School District’s general fund operating budget for this time was approximately $133 million. While completing the audit, examiners reviewed financial statements and evaluated internal controls established by district management. The audit work focused on specific areas that have potential for abuse and misuse of public resources.

The specific areas that were reviewed include:
• Payroll – gross wages and leave cash outs
• Financial condition and fiscal sustainability
• Associated Student Body fundraising at Marcus Whitman Middle School and South Kitsap High School
• Accounts payable – general disbursements and travel expenditures
• Timely response to public record requests

“We are very pleased with the results,” said Superintendent Karst Brandsma. “This report reflects our employees’ commitment to quality work and their dedication to strong stewardship of tax payer resources. They’ve done a terrific job.”

The Washington State Auditor’s Office said “The State Auditor’s Office takes seriously our role of providing state and local governments with assurance and accountability as the independent auditor of public accounts. In this way, we strive to help governments work better, cost less, deliver higher value, and earn greater public trust. We appreciate the opportunity to work with South Kitsap School District staff and value their cooperation during the audit.”
