On January 11, 2018, the South Kitsap School District Board of Directors met in executive session to discuss the option of extending the contract for Superintendent Karst Brandsma. The board took official action during the public meeting following the executive session.

Mr. Brandsma was selected as interim superintendent to replace Dr. Michelle Reid. His initial one-year contract began in August 2016 and was extended last January for the 2017–2018 school year. With this extension, Mr. Brandsma will remain through the 2018-2019 school year.

“We are thankful that Mr. Brandsma was open to a contract extension. He has shown strong leadership through the final phase of grade reconfiguration this year and we will count on his expertise as we move forward with shifting elementary school boundaries, addressing our growing enrollment, facility needs, and other initiatives,” stated board president Rebecca Diehl.

Mr. Brandsma earned his superintendent’s credentials from Seattle Pacific University, administrative credentials from Central Washington University, and Bachelors and Masters of Education from Eastern Washington University.

Mr. Brandsma has extensive experience and has held interim superintendent and district administrator positions with the Oak Harbor, Mt. Baker, and Bellingham School Districts. He retired from the Everett School District in 2009 after serving as Interim Superintendent and Associate/Deputy Superintendent for eight years.
