Multi Factor Authentication (MFA)

One effective strategy we use to combat cyber-attacks is multi-factor authentication (MFA). This process is a combination of what you know (your password) and what you have (a mobile phone app or hardware token).

External Access To Systems

Since December, 2023, South Kitsap staff have had the option to access SKSD systems from outside the district by using MFA. This is an optional service that many staff choose to take advantage of.

Skyward / WSIPC Qmlativ

With the migration to Qmlativ in Summer, 2025, all staff who access sensitive areas will be required to use MFA. Employees who only log in to review their personal information will not be required to use MFA.

After initial setup, staff will be prompted for MFA authentication as follows:

  • Systemwide Users: Every Day
  • Business/Payroll/HR Users: Every 14 Days
  • All Other Staff: Every 30 Days

MFA METHODS

Authenticator App

There are several apps available for mobile phones that generate a unique code number that you will be prompted for during login. We recommend the following (available from your phone's app store):

  • Microsoft Authenticator App
  • Cisco DUO App
  • Google Authenticator

If you do not have access to a mobile phone, you can use the SafeID application to generate the codes from your district desktop/laptop computer. Please enter a work order for your ITSS to help get this set up for you.

FAQ

Q. What if I don’t have a cell phone to use?

A.  Enter a ticket to ITS to have the SafeID application installed on your district computer.

Q. I've recently upgraded my phone and MFA is no longer working. How can I get logged in?

A. Please call us at x7047 to verify your identity and we can help you update to your new phone

Q. This seems like a hassle. Why do we have to do this?

  1. Since the implementation of MFA in our district, we have not had any cyberattack incidents. This industry-standard practice is very effective at helping keep our data and systems safe.

Q. I thought using MFA was optional - are you now requiring it?

  1. MFA is still optional for many SKSD services if you want access outside the district (email, ClassLink, Google resource). However, Skyward Qmlativ has a mandatory MFA requirement for employees who access sensitive information.
