Teaching and Learning
For more than a decade, the South Kitsap School District has been deeply involved in the state's reform effort. Starting with the Four State Goals (skills, knowledge, thinking, and application), the development of the Essential Learning Requirements (EALR), the Grade Level Expectations (GLE), and Common Core Standards, educators, students, and parents now have clear learning targets.
That effort continues with the implementation of Washington Learning Standards in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Next Generation Science Standards. This reform effort continues to have an important and positive impact on the South Kitsap School District. Classroom instructional decisions are far more data driven than ever before. Every staff member is responsible for becoming familiar with these standards and using them to direct instruction. Teachers will also use assessment data to guide the instructional process.
The Teaching and Learning Department seeks to assist schools and students in their effort to meet these standards. The department plays a key role by providing instructional materials, on-going staff training, and support for the assessment process. We are committed to district and school improvement.
It is our mission to support teachers and administrators in their roles to ensure high levels of learning for ALL students by:
-
Providing leadership in the selection of standards-based, aligned K-12 instructional resources grounded in effective instruction practice.
-
Coordinating, designing, and delivering professional learning.
-
Supervising state and district assessments.
-
Coordinating the district's efforts to increase student achievement.
